Cricket Chronicles - Wednesday 27th May

1st XI - Abberley 102 for 5, The Elms 101 for 7 dec - won by 5 wickets

The weather threatened again to ruin a match day and with The Elms seemingly wanting to pull the plug, frantic phone calls ensued to convince them that the forecast was promising. Fortunately common sense prevailed and a full game was able to take place.

With only 90 minutes to bat each, the best way to win was to put the opposition in to bat. Dan L started inauspiciously with 8 runs conceded off 3 balls. His next 33 though only went for 7 and he bagged four wickets on his 1st XI debut, not bad for someone who somehow began the season in the 4th XI !! He was helped by some good fielding and notably a brilliant running catch by Harry. Harry himself bowled a very tidy spell and got out the dangerous opener with one that jagged back off the green pitch. Ed and James bowled some tidy overs of spin and The Elms were restricted to 101-7 at tea.

Dan G fell in the first over, his first failure of a productive term and Hugo played all round one too, to leave us 16-2. Enter Captain Cornish, he of much promise but little patience. He had to really restrain himself to begin with but with good running and a steady supply of byes, the scoreboard ticked over nicely. Fergus batted for 12 overs alongside Will who gradually opened up , punishing the bad ball but still watchful against some useful seam bowling. 50 runs were added before Fergus was bowled and Ed came to the crease. He too played a sensible innings and with Will in complete command a 7 wicket victory looked ours for the taking. However with only 2 needed Will hit the ball hard to deep mid wicket for might have been his half century and the winning boundary only for a fielder to pouch the catch. Will F fell first ball and with the minutes ticking away a moment of doubt crept in. Ed though calmly hit the ball straight to secure a good win.
This was a very pleasing effort from the boys. The basics were done properly, the fielding was lively and the run chase timed beautifully. Will finally constructed an innings and earned his colours cap for his matchwinning performance.

2nd XI - Abberley 151 for 8 dec , The Elms 96 all out - won by 55 runs

"All Barrells Firing as Abberley Achieve First Victory!"

At last the sweet scent of victory circulated the pavilion and the 2nd.XI basked in reflected glory. We started cautiously; losing a wicket in the second over and only amassing a paltry 34 runs off the first ten overs.

However a productive partnership was evolving between William B. and Jack C.
and we doubled our score in next five overs. Will B. began to play with some panache and Jack C grew in confidence. Will B. raised his bat for his 50 and his innings lay the platform for the team's success. George M. rattled the bowlers with his aggressive shots and scored a whirlwind 37. Richard S. scored a valuable 16 and we had reached our target of 150.
The Elms took advantage of our wayward bowling but they also helped to create their own downfall. Their running between the wickets was Kamakazee in its application. Our fielding by contrast was sharp and slick. Run outs, catches and straight bowling saw us to victory.
A match to savour: our first win, Will B.'s 50, George M.'s 37, Archie's direct hit, the return of Oscar S. and the catch of the season so far by Timon W. (I'm sure he juggled the ball just to make the full-blooded drive look difficult to catch standing close at silly mid-off!!) Well played one and all.

4th XI - Abberley 100 for 7, The Elms 101 for 5 - lost
This was a match that we really should have won. Against a weak bowling attack our top end batsmen not only failed to put bat on ball with any authority but construed to get themselves out in every way possible. Luckily Alex made a quick fire 28 in the middle order but with a lack of urgency in accelerating the run rate in the last five overs and we ended our innings on 100 for 7.

In the first over of the Elms innings we dropped a catch which proved very costly as their batsman then proceed to be the cornerstone of the Elms reply and remained undefeated. Three further dropped catches and some lacklustre fielding meant that we were always chasing the game. Although Alex and Jake both took two wickets in two balls each it was not quite enough. The Elms surpassed our total for the loss of five wickets with two overs to spare.

Colts A - Abberley 103 for 9, The Elms 102 all out - won by 1 wicket

Colts B - Abberley 126 for 2, The Elms 124 for 6 - won by 8 wickets
