A squad of eight boys from the 1st XI travelled up to Telford on Sunday for the Wrekin College 6 a side. Matches consisted of 5 overs per side with every player except the keeper bowling an over. The first game was won comfortably against Wrekin but the next two were absolute nailbiters going to the last ball. We scored 48 against Arnold Lodge, 24 from Francis who crucially hit our final two balls for 4. They needed only 3 off the final 2 balls. The outfield was the 1st XI pitch of the senior school and enormous. However big Jack produced two great balls, the first which brought no run and the second which bowled the player.
Jack was to repeat the feat in the next game against Newport CC, a local club. Defending 40 runs, only 1 was needed to win ,as they had lost fewer wickets, but another great dot ball was hurled down to snatch us the game.
Heading into the last game with Birchfield we were top of the group but then our crown slipped. A tired looking Abberley could only muster 26 and a tenacious Birchfield, smarting from their mauling the previous day, played the sort of cricket that their coach knew was possible from them. We were brushed aside in 2 overs. Points were then level but with the number of wickets taken also level , run rate was calculated and Birchfield were in the final.
So we headed for the smaller pitch to play Prestfelde but changed the order to allow everyone a bat. Jack and Matt sat out and whilst our 46 was entertaining, it was not enough as Prestfelde made hay in the sunshine. A long day in the sun that almost brought rewards. The final saw Packwood beat Birchfield by 9 runs.
