Abberley Hall Fun Run and 10K - Sunday 11th May 2008

After last year’s atrocious conditions the weather this year turned from the ridiculous to the sublime. The course was dry and the sun beat down. Tremendous effort was made with the fancy dress competition with characters including Chimney sweep and son, 60’s Smashers, St Trinians girls, a waiter complete with tray and full glasses, a witch, Harry Potter and many more. The three prizes were given to the recycling girls, the toothpaste, tooth brush and soap, and the fully suited gorillas (one in sun glasses which he traded during the run for the contents of the drinks tray with the waiter).
It was very hot and a great effort was made by all those who took part.

The Sternkopf family featured strongly again with Stefan winning the 10K, Stephie the 2nd female and Lewis the 1st U8 boy in the Fun Run.

The Warrallo girls produced a clean sweep in the Fun Run. Alex was the 1st Female and Georgie was the 1st U8 girl.

The Cornish family also were successful with Allyson the 2nd Veteran Female and Toby (10) 19th in the 10K. Isla was also 3rd Female in the Fun Run.

Richard Dilworth continued his success over the many years that he has been competing in this event with a 1st Veteran Male in the 10K. Richard also was involved in the designing of the course and so he had only himself to blame for the testing course in these conditions.

Congatulations to all the medal winners but also to all those who took part. It is fantastic to see so many people of all ages running around the Abberley Hall grounds and enjoying an event such as this.

Great fun was had on all of the stalls where Mr and Mrs Manning and their team operated with their usual cheerful enthusiasm and efficiency. A range of traditional stalls entertained all, with the notorious Cow Milking stall and ‘Splat the Rat’ in operation. The Coconuts are always popular as well as the very well stocked tombola.

The ice cream stall was understandably very popular, and try as everyone did; they were unable to consume the mountain of homemade cakes which the people of the village impressively produced.

It was also fantastic to have the Police car present, although the police lady did nearly win the fancy dress competition!

It was good this year that so many took the opportunity to go up the great land mark that is the Abberley Hall Clock Tower. A special thanks must go to Mick Williams and his helpers for opening the doors and providing guided tours.
