1st XI Abberley 115 all out, Bromsgrove 126 for 7 - Lost by 11 runs
Another testing season lies ahead as the 1st XI slipped to a second defeat in 2 days. This time having had Bromsgrove at 53-5, we let them off the hook slightly as we wilted in the strong sunshine. Credit must go to the middle order of Bromsgrove who ran well and hit the ball hard but their score of 126-7 was 30 more than should have been allowed. The top order batting so far this term has been pretty fragile and yet again we were 45-6. However with a shuffled order all was not lost. Arthur and big Jack, yet again, came to the rescue and when Ed and Will were at the crease an unlikely win seemed momentarily possible. However both fell in quick succession to leave us 11 runs short. An exciting game and another in which we were in with a shout of victory only to have fallen short of the line. You have to make your own luck and this team still is making too many basic mistakes at crucial times.
2nd XI Abberley 74 for 8, Bromsgrove 78 for 5 - Lost by 5 wkts
A beautiful sunny afternoon was a welcome change to the wet weather of recent days and so it was to Bromsgrove that we did venture. The pitch looked firm and it played well. Unfortunately both our openers were back in the pavilion without the scorers being troubled! 0 for 2 was a blow but Nick B. steered us towards a more respectable total. There was some gritty defiance by all the batsmen and with extras helping us out we managed to get to 74 within out quota of 25 overs. Our bowling was generally good but we needed to be consistent. James A took a wicket with an awesome delivery: pitch middle and leg and took off stump. Oliver P. conjured up a magnificent run out and Hugo S. also took a vital wicket with his measured spin bowling. But Bromsgrove were always in the driving seat and with a couple of high scoring overs the pressure was off as we defended our boundaries. Despite this defeat the team can take many positives from the game: good ground fielding, some excellent bowling and some gritty batting. Well played Nick B. especially but also well done to all who played.
3rd XI Abberley , Bromsgrove -
4th XI Abberley 78 for 8, Bromsgrove 79 for 3 - Lost by 7 wkts
On a glorious afternoon for cricket, after being put into bat we made a calamitous start to the match – 4 overs bowled, 4 wickets down (3 ‘played on’) and 10 runs on the scoreboard, things were looking a little bleak at this point. Peter and William then played very sensibly for a few overs and we began to score some runs, before Peter was out. Enter our star of the day Geordie, who remained at the crease for the remainder of our innings, scoring a very noteworthy 29 and being the main contributor in our final total 78 for 8 from 21 overs.
Despite some good fielding close to the wicket with William taking two very good catches and Osacar bowling very well, we were unable to stem the scoring of the Bromsgrove batsmen. Some sloppy fielding in the outfield let us down with several fours being scored that should only really have been singles. Bromsgrove surpassed our total with 3 overs to spare.
All in all, a good competitive game - well played boys.
Just remember for next week “it’s fielding and catches that win matches”.
