Cricket Chronicles - Saturday 23rd May
1st XI v Packwood
Packwood 108 all out, Abberley 68 all out - Lost by 40 runs

With Summer returning and Abberley actually winning a toss, Packwood were put in to bat. After the lacklustre effort against Prestfelde there was a pleasing intensity to our out cricket. The spinners were on early and Rory in particular bowled some decent off-spin though Max was a close second with some lovely flight. Wickets fell steadily with James the pick of the bowlers with a double wicket maiden. Arthur bowled tidily and picked up 3 wickets on debut. Catches were held, there were 2 direct hit run outs and our season looked to be about to be kick started.
But before I could reflect on such a pleasing effort in the field, the wickets started to tumble. Packwood only bowled their two spinners throughout our innings but the Abberley batsmen made a contribution to every single dismissal. Decision making once again was poor, defensive technique non-existent and despite interspersing dismissals with clubbed boundaries, we fell 40 runs short of our target of 108. We only used 19 of the available 37 overs. AARRGH !!

2nd XI v Prestfelde (away)
Prestfelde 171 for 5 dec, Abberley 50 all out - lost by 121 runs

"Second Eleven succumb to powerful Packwood"

The 2nd. were outplayed, out thought and out of the game! Packwood batted first and Jack.S managed to take two early wickets but his good bowling was not well supported and too many long-hops and full tosses were sent down for the batters to club to the boundary. Tom S. came on late in the innings and he posed problems for the batsmen with his excellent leg-spin but by this stage the Packwood bastmen were well on top. There were runs to be made as the wicket, despite keeping low, was good and true. Unfortunately in our innings many of our batsmen got out to rash shots and it was only a matter of time before Packwood finished us off. A disappointing performance. Packwood are a good team but we didn't really show our potential and play to the standards we are capable of. Never mind! On to the next match. Come on Abberley!

3rd XI v Packwood
Packwood 145 for 9,, Abberley 91 all out - lost by 54 runs

A beautiful day, a disappointing performance. We fielded quite well but bowled dreadfully, conceding 50 extras! In truth the opposition had batsmen who looked as though they knew how to bat. A number of them made useful runs.

In reply our batting was laboured. Footwork and an ability to hit the ball were in short supply. There was one shining light, however. Joe scored 43 and looked as though he might rescue the game. He batted valiantly, powerfully and sensibly lasting 23 overs. There were runs aplenty, but innumerable scoring opportunities were squandered.

Packwood were better on the day and deserved their victory.

4th XI v Packwood
Abberley 96 all out, Packwood 100 for 3 - lost by 7 wickts

On a lovely day for cricket we lost the toss and were put into bat. We had learned our lessons from previous matches by the fact that you can not score runs if you are out. Our openers took this to heart as they played good sensible cricket, the Packwood bowlers were very accurate and we struggled to get the ball to the boundary, but George and Timon remained at the crease for 26 overs (yes 26 overs!) for an opening partnership of 44 before George was bowled. Gavin tried his best to accelerate the run rate with a quick fire 14 before he was out, shortly followed by Timon who finally succumbed after scoring 24 and batting for nearly 30 overs. We scrambled a few more runs and were all out just after tea for a total of 96 off a staggering 40 overs.

The Packwood batsmen were on good form; we fielded competently and bowled reasonably well. Their batsmen did what was required to combat our bowlers; they defended the good balls and hit (very hard) the bad balls to the boundary. We had a purple patch when George got 2 wickets in an over and we ran out another batsman, but the runs had been accumulated. The remaining Packwood batmen despatched our bowlers mostly to the boundary with ease and scored the remaining runs with 20 minutes of the match to spare.

Overall a great game with nearly 200 runs scored!

Under 9 XI v Packwood
Abberley 216, Packwood 378

*U9's lose to tidy Packwood bowlers*

Fielding first, Abberley bowled well and caught their catches (with two very notable diving efforts from Josh and Peter in particular). Packwood ran everything and kept us on our toes. Abberley's fielding was alert and nimble, with special praise reserved for wicketkeeper Max and the ever-keen George A. Packwood kept their scoreboard ticking over, and concluded their inings on 338 for 7, a more than respectable score.

Tea had clearly energised our opening batsmen (George B and Josh) and a smattering of fours and sixes from these twonot only had Packwood looking worried but also raised home hopes early on. The run chase soon faltered, however, and some tidy Packwood bowling kept the runs down and the pressure on. Abberley finished on 216, making it a substantial victory for the home team, and a justly deserved one as well..
