| On a lovely day for cricket we lost the toss and were put into bat. We had learned our lessons from previous matches by the fact that you can not score runs if you are out. Our openers took this to heart as they played good sensible cricket, the Packwood bowlers were very accurate and we struggled to get the ball to the boundary, but George and Timon remained at the crease for 26 overs (yes 26 overs!) for an opening partnership of 44 before George was bowled. Gavin tried his best to accelerate the run rate with a quick fire 14 before he was out, shortly followed by Timon who finally succumbed after scoring 24 and batting for nearly 30 overs. We scrambled a few more runs and were all out just after tea for a total of 96 off a staggering 40 overs.
The Packwood batsmen were on good form; we fielded competently and bowled reasonably well. Their batsmen did what was required to combat our bowlers; they defended the good balls and hit (very hard) the bad balls to the boundary. We had a purple patch when George got 2 wickets in an over and we ran out another batsman, but the runs had been accumulated. The remaining Packwood batmen despatched our bowlers mostly to the boundary with ease and scored the remaining runs with 20 minutes of the match to spare.
Overall a great game with nearly 200 runs scored!
Under 9 XI v Packwood
Abberley 216, Packwood 378
*U9's lose to tidy Packwood bowlers*
Fielding first, Abberley bowled well and caught their catches (with two very notable diving efforts from Josh and Peter in particular). Packwood ran everything and kept us on our toes. Abberley's fielding was alert and nimble, with special praise reserved for wicketkeeper Max and the ever-keen George A. Packwood kept their scoreboard ticking over, and concluded their inings on 338 for 7, a more than respectable score.
Tea had clearly energised our opening batsmen (George B and Josh) and a smattering of fours and sixes from these twonot only had Packwood looking worried but also raised home hopes early on. The run chase soon faltered, however, and some tidy Packwood bowling kept the runs down and the pressure on. Abberley finished on 216, making it a substantial victory for the home team, and a justly deserved one as well..
