Football Focus - Wednesday 20th February

1st XI vChrist’s Brecon 2 - 1

A perfect day for football, but a waterlogged pitch meant that the game was on the astro. Preparation had been positive the previous day – “Go and play like that” was the instruction. For the first half they didn’t. We conceded a goal despite dominating the game. However we hadn’t created a noteworthy chance. Sluggish and lacklustre, we were second to every ball.

A rocket at half-time galvanised the boys. Immediately we were on the attack, creating openings. The opposition had a strong defence and proved hard to get past. Eventually the breakthrough came with a neat finish from Max with ten minutes to go. A second followed minutes later when Max bagged a brace. The tempo had been raised and the ball was being passed with more purpose.

In the end we deserved the victory, but we had made heavy weather of it in the sunshine.

3rd XI vMoffats 3 - 3

This was another belter of a game from 2 very commited teams, showing lots of energy and passion. Abberley struck first with good play between the strikers, Nick and Charlie, the latter rounding the keeper to slot home. However Moffats are a well organised team and hit back immediately with a good corner that resulted in a soft goal. The second and third were long range shots, one including a beckham-esque free kick. However this Abberley team are developing a good fighting spirit and pushed hard in the second half with Charlie and Nick working really well together up front. They combined to slot home 2 crackers from close range. Credit should go to a very hard working midfield, particularly Oscar and Freddie, with the back four of Harry, Henry, Will A-J and Fergus holding fast and repelling many dangerous shots on goal. Highlight of the day was Henry P. shooting from the dge of his own box and very nearly getting over the keeper. A thoroughly entertaining game for all concerned. Man of the match, Harry D.

Colts A v Hereford CJS 0 - 1

The last remaining unbeaten record of the football term went on wednesday with a 1-0 home defeat to Hereford Cathedral. It sounds like a close game but Hereford were good value for their win and only some last ditch tackles, a few misses and a post kept them from adding to the tally. Abberley rarely threatened and were out muscled all over the field. Harry, James, Toby C and notably Josh of the outfield players were up to the task and Max made a valiant effort to stop the goal but it was well over the line before he could claw it back. Hereford were a better team and deserving winners.
