U13s Bromsgrove Tournament
Once again the Bromsgrove Tournament was very well organised and provided a high standard of hockey. Abberley's first match was against Grace Dieu and they immediately adopted a fast pace and had the majority of the attacking play. After several super shots at goal and near misses Immy and Jenny made the final score 2-0.
We went straight on to play again this time against Bromsgrove. The girls were aprehensive having lost an 11-a-side fixture earlier in the season, however, they were positive and Jenny opted to let Bromsgrove shoot into the sun. It was a very close game with skillful hockey from both sides. There were shots taken at both ends but the final score was 0-0.
Our 3rd game without a rest was against Kings Worcester and it was alot to ask of the girls after 2 fast paced matches. Positions were slightly altered for this match and while regular sweeper Holly played right half she unfortuantly received a stick in the head for her efforts and was sent to the medical centre. Fortunatley Immy scored to bring Abberley the victory. 1 - 0.
After a games rest the girls were ready to face Denstone College. However we had lost some of our momentum and Denstone scored early on. Abberley had to work very hard to stay in the game and it was Annie who performed her trademark 'Do an Annie!' by picking the ball up in defence and driving it up the wing, into the D and scoring a goal. Final score 1 - 1.
Our last league match was against Packwood, who looked very strong against other teams. It took all of Abberley's skill and determination to finish with a great win with super goals from jenny and Immy. 2 - 1.
Abberley's efforts meant they came top in their league and were to face the runners-up in League 2 in the Semi-Final. This was RGSAO who demonstrated impressive stick skills and game play. With shots on goal at both ends (but possibly more pressure from Abberley) the score after 10 minutes was 0-0. We now had to go into extra time where we played 5-a-side looking for a 'Golden Goal'. Abberley could not have been unluckier, having shot at goal and hitting the post the ball was then picked up by RGSAO who took it up to their attacking goal and scored the softest goal imaginable. Abberley girls were devastated.
However, we still had one match to go - a 3rd/4th place play-off against Bromsgrove. The game was just as intense as it had been earlier in the afternoon and the final core was 0-0. the Bromsgrove Coach suggested we left it there which meant we shared 3rd place.
What a high standard of hockey. The final stages were so close and could have gone any way but in the final Foremarke beat RGSAO 1 - 0. Well done girls!!
