1st XV v Monmouth (away) 0-39
Playing an U13 A team from a large year group is always a good challenge for us but one which we enjoy testing ourselves against. On this occasion we met a stronger and faster team but for large periods of the match it was a great contest. We rucked well and put in some brave and fearless tackles, particularly from Max C-S, Matthew S, Ollie P and Hugo S. Hugo’s tackle drew gasps form both sets of supporters as a threw himself at their big centre who had broken through the line and only had Hugo to beat. It was certainly one of the moments of the season so far. Eventually their pressure told and we periodically ran out of defenders for them to score. The game was great to watch and all were surprised by the score at the end as it didn’t seem such a one sided match. Games such as these reveal true character and their was some impressive character on display.
2nd XV v Monmouth (away) 0-15
Colts A v Warwick 14-7
The Colts A bounced back in style with a hard fought encounter against a big and powerful Warwick side. Solid defence coupled with positive counter-attack when we gained possesion, set up a terrific second half with the game on a knife edge at nil all. Pressure from both sides was intense and one wondered who would blink first! Abberley forwards then raised their game and produced a surge to set up a try, which was ably finished off. A second try came 10 minutes later as our opponents forwards began to tire. However, they were not finished and scored a well deserved consolation try before the final whistle. This was the best team performance from Colts A so far and the coach is purring!
Colts B v Warwick 26-26
"Colts B rise from the ashes"
This was a quite stunning performance of epic preportions by Colts B who thoroughly deserved the draw and were even unlucky not to come away with a win. From 26-7 down just after half time the boys really got a second wind and blew the opposition away in a magnificent 20 minutes. Our tackling was poor and the boys did not look up for it in the first half, after the break they went down to a 4 th try, but the inner steel was there and some big players stepped up to the mark. Again the forwards fought for every scrap of possesion, with Morgan, Rory, Ed.H. , and Oli .H. really getting involved. The backs spread the ball like butter on toast, and there were some powerful runs from Jack and Jake. The beating heart of the team though was Aidan the captain, he nipped and jinked and caused all sorts of problems for the opposition. His bravery and leadership were unquestionable. He took many hits for the team and his team responded A very special mention should go to Oli. H. who came in from the C team at the last minute to replace the ill, Nick .H. He played with alot of courage and bravery. Well done to all the boys, a superb team effort.
Colts C v Warwick 5-54
‘Valiant Colts C walloped by powerful Warwick’
Despite losing this match, Colts C must be congratulated for their courage and determination. They never gave up and were pressing the Warwick try line as the final whistle blew. Warwick were the victors in this match. They were big, strong and fast. Nevertheless Jamie S. wrestled the ball from the opposition in the mauls, Robert P. made a number of telling runs, James G. scrummaged hard but we were often on the back foot. Thomas Wh. gained ground as did Otto W. and Rory F. but we lost the ball too often and their fast runners out stripped our defence on many occasions. The second half began brightly with Thomas Wh. (captain) scampering over for a well deserved try. He ran with purpose and saw the gap. Unfortunately, we could not sustain any pressure and we gave away too much possession. In conclusion, this match was not really a contest in term s of a result and in the circumstances Colts C must be congratulated mightily for their perseverance, determination and spirit.
Well done to Warwick but three hearty cheers for Colts C! Well done boys. Thankyou to our supporters and please feel free to shout even louder next time!
