Rugby Roundup - Wednesday 31th October

1st XV v Malvern Prep 36-26 (away)

Today was another day when we split the 1st XV and 2nd XV as we were playing two teams of equal strength in Malvern Prep and Lucton. One always hopes that the teams are closely matched and that was the case on this occasion. Malvern had four big strong and quick players who were always a threat but our superior rucking, handling and mobility meant that we were able to dominate possession and keep the ball away from their strength.
The players who come into the 1st XV for the first time coped very well with the increased pace and physicality. These players were Barney W, William M, Archie L, Henry and William P, Wyndham H P, F Hill and O Perry. The regular 1st XV players lead the way and managed to maintain a furious pace and high skill level throughout.

2nd XV v v Lucton 12-19

3rd XV v St Richard'sl 15-36 (away)

The match was a much more even game and Abberley played well. The half back pairing of Charlie and Fergus was very good and they linked some very good passes together. Abberley linked some great phases of play together and the teams confidence grew throughout the game and as a result we scored three good tries through Timon, Fergus and Jorge. The forwards worked hard and the rucking throughout the game was much better.

Colts B v Malvern Prep 26-14

Colts B produced their best performance of the season by far in this match. Two very evenly matched teams fronted up well, but Abberley attacked straight from the kick off and kept up the early pressure which resulted in an early try from the forwards, with Max.W. diving over. This as ever galvanised the opposition into action and they hit our lines hard pushing for an equaliser, with well deserved pressure it was soon inevitable. Half time, 7-7 and all to play for. Abberley pushed hard but were stunned by a quick try from Malvern in the second half. However it was impressive to see how the boys showed a great deal more composure than previously, and were a lot more ruthless in their finishing. Some great passing resulted in a blistering try down the wing for Chris .L. The forwards played brilliantly all afternoon and the match was wrapped up by two excelllent tries involving both the forwards and the backs. It was extremely pleasing to see the boys really working hard for the victory, and credit should definately go to Malvern for giving us a very tough test. Mentions in despatches for, Robbie and his excellent counter attacking from full back, Jake, and Jack for punching holes in their back line defence, and the whole pack in general for their excellent pouncing on loose balls and speed about the park. Big thank you to all the parents who helped us on also.

Colts C v St Richard's 5-48

'A Halloween Horror for Colts C !'

St.Richard's may have had only 9 players but they performed with passion, pace and power. Colts C started brightly but like the Autumn sunshine they waned somewhat during the afternoon. Tackling wasn't good, passing was infrequent, support was lacking. St.Richard's were skilful and moved the ball quickly. Oliver H. played magnificently but he needed more support. Jamie S. was also busy about the field. The backs ran well when they got the ball, notably Thomas Wh. and Rory F. Alex H. made a promising run and Otto W. scored our only try. Well done to him. However we did not play as a team and attacking moves petered out leaving us to scuttle back and defend. Unfortunately, we scuttled too slowly and tries were being scored at frequent intervals. Nevertheless, Colts C never gave up and were attacking when the final whislte was blown.
