Rugby Roundup - Saturday 13th October

1st XV v Wycliffe 45-0

With J Stansfeld away enjoying the excitement of ‘Le Crunch’ in Paris, G Whyte returned to the forwards. E Palmer and H Scott also retained their places in the backs.
Due to injuries and illness at Wycliffe, we were asked to play with uncontested scrums. This took a lot of the pace out of the game and made for a disjointed first half. We were still able to exert much of the pressure and tries soon followed. For a period of the second half, the normal scrum was resumed and the intensity of the game picked up as a result. M Sanderson and F Burke were again strong in the centre but as the ball was failing to reach the wings, E Palmer swapped with M Sanderson and the balance was better.

This was a controlled and powerful performance which bodes well for the sterner tests after half term.

Colts A v Wycliffe 35-0

The Colts A moved up a gear to control the game against Wycliffe straight from the first whistle. The forwards took the ball into challenging areas and put the opposition on the back foot. Neat interplay from the half backs set up scoring opportunities for the back line and scores soon followed. In the second half stout defence drew the sting from the oppositions attack and we were able to camp in the opponents half for long periods. Further scores kept the pressure on Wycliffe and some mistakes were punished towards the end. This was our best all round performance to date-well done.

Colts B v Wycliffe (away) 57-0

This was a good day at the office for Colts B, who went through the basics and got their just rewards. The boys started the afternoon in a rather disorganised fashion, arriving at the pitch late and not looking focused in the warm up, however a lot of this was banished early on with some excellent work from the forwards and a well deserved try for Nick.H. diving over. This rather set the tone for the proceedings and our dominant forwards rucked and scrummaged well. Max .W. bagged two, Nick another, Morgan .W. had a brace, and the inspired captain Aidan, nipped at the heels of the opposition and scored 2 lovely tries. Robbie deserves a mention for working hard on his kicking during the week and reaping the benefits. Again many players who were not on the score sheet worked hard for the team, Ed.M. tormented their back line and set up some lovely tries for others, Jake hooked brilliantly despite a rather painful injury. However it is important to note that this team are really working incredibly hard as a unit and are slowly learning of the importance of passing to one another. Thank you to all our wonderful, cheery supporters for making the trek to Stroud.
