Rugby Roundup - Wednesday 3rd October

1st XV v Winterfold 28-0

The first half of this match continued very much where we left off in the Bromsgrove match with the forwards dominating and providing plenty of ball for the backs to attack with precision. We played with increasing width and moved the ball out of contact well. A Scott and H Oakes were accurate with their conversions. In the second half, however, the forwards reduced their intensity and the backs played with less depth. This allowed Winterfold back into the match and we had to defend resolutely in order to keep them from scoring.

2nd XV v Winterfold

Colts A v Winterfold (away) 26-5

A game of two halves. In the first we secured plenty of possession and passed the ball fluently to set up many try scoring opportunities. At half time the score of 19-0 reflected our dominance. Unfortunately we could not maintain our grip on proceedings and gained little ball in the second half. One further score stretched our lead but our defence was pounded for much of the half.

Colts B v Winterfold (away) 42-0

This was an impressive victory for the B's and achieved with some good old fashioned hard graft at the chalk face. All of the players stood up and were counted, taking some heavy hits and tackling ferociously in return. The forwards rucked very well, with Rory F. leading the charge. He was backed up well by the likes Nick and max and Jake .P. also lead by example. Ed.M. worked the line well and scored a wonderful brace with Jack and Chris L. also making great gains and breaking the back line. A wonderful confidence booster, and it was pleasing that we defended so well under pressure. Freddie P. deserves a mention in despatches for heroic kicking to clear our lines.

Colts C v Winterfold 5-28

'Colts C involved in competitive contest'

Despite losing this match, the Colts C can hold their heads high and be justifiably praised for their improved play. The rucking was very good and the handling was much more secure. The game was even until the stroke of half-time when Winterforld went over from a line-out. In the second half the speedier Winterfold backs found a couple of gaps and ran in some good tries. Nevertheless, Abberley kept on going. Callum M. was once again a tower of strength. James R. had his best game to date and another James , James G., made a number of telling runs. Jamie S. got more involved and used his power to gain valuable yards for us. The pick of the forwards was without doubt our Captain, Oliver H. He was dynamic and was always first to the break down. His excellent play kept us in the hunt and he stopped a number of promising Winterfold attacks. In the backs Thomas Wh. was elusive and Rory F. ran with pace. Robert P. also played well and broke free a couple of times. Tom W. on the left wing provided goood support.
In conclusion it was a splendid afternoon's Rugby with Winterfold deservedly winning but with Abberley Colts C having put in a much improved performance!
Well played the team and thankyou once again to our wonderful band of loyal supporters; you thoroughly deserved your post-match tea.
