1st XV v Dean Close (Away) 17-7
After two very tough games the learning curve has been steep. We were far more competitive at the breakdown and dominated this area. Several players are playing in new positions and they are starting to learn their trade, especially in the back row. We continually broke the gain line and the support play was increasingly effective.
This match has provided confidence and shown evidence of a developing team.
3rd XV v Dean Close 20-19
A great game of very close rugby. A great team performance especially by the forwards who won a lot of ball. Alex again had a wonderful match tackling and running at pace. Others who stand out are Henry, William and Dan.
Colts A v Dean Close 27-19
Early success at running the ball led to good gains of territory against our opponents and two tries were a just reward. A period of indecision followed and this allowed Dean Close to counter-attack and score occasionally. This pattern continued in the second half. We emerged eventual winners but our sleepy spells will be punished in future.
Colts B v Dean Close 49-7
The Colts B recorded their first win of the season in impressive fashion today, with a series of aggressive, and well honed tries. However, it didn't look as rosy from the outset. After less than 2 minutes, Abberley were 7-0 down. A series of ill disciplined rucks and a poor scrummage, resulted in a well deserved try for Dean Close. However Abberley awoke from their slumber and fought back well. Again they were led magnficently by the scrum half, Aidan. He put his body on the line everywhere and tackled like a whirling dervish! The forwards worked better as a unit, with Jack leading from the front, Nick and Jake deserve a mention in despatches for doing a lot of the dirty work, getting over the ball and getting clean ball for the backs. Edward, danced and skipped through the defence and scored a great try. A good confidence booster for the long hard season ahead!
N.B. Note to the ref, check you have a whiste that works at the start of the match!!
Colts C v Dean Close (away) 25-0
'Colts C combine power and speed to overcome Dean Close'
First away fixture is always a tricky one: change into suits, collect your kit, remember to take a towel, have you got a hair brush and yes lunch is at 12.30.
All that to get organised and then to play rugby. But the Colts C were excellent in every department; only one pair of shorts left in changing rooms after the match! On the field, the team chased and hounded the opposition and were soon in possession of the ball. Having had little opportunity in our previous game it was understandable that our players wanted to run and run with the ball; passing was not quite in the game plan at this stage. However, speedster Tom.Wh. made many dashing runs for the try line and scored. Otto also ran with determination and he too got his name on the score sheet. Callum was powerful and surged ahead to sccore. Oliver.H tackled anything that moved. Matthew R. at scrum half was excellent and helped give our backs plenty of ball. A splendind tea followed the game and Colts C returned to Abberley a happy bunch of players.
Well done to all and a thankyou to our supporters who encouraged the boys from the sidelines.
