The Enameller’s trip to Birmingham Jewellery Quarter

All the enamellers climbed into the minibus with Mrs Vicenzotti and Anja Potze. Mrs Potze judged our competition and arranged our prize, to visit Deakin and Francis.

We started the day by driving to the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham. As we entered the factory, we were led into the Board Room. There were two huge show cases with a considerable amount of beautiful things in them, made over the past two hundred years. After that, we moved on to the workshops where rings and other products were made. Henry, one of the owners, showed us how signate rings were beaten into shape and the stages they go through before you buy them. They still make them in the same way as they did two hundred years ago. We then moved on to the place where they stamp the rings.

To make enamelled cufflinks, they had a lot of different stamps which included Ralph Lauren, Paul Smith, Bentley and Mercedes as well as many other designs. Next we went to the place where they put enamel onto individual pieces. They first add water to the enamel powder and put it on with a special sort of fountain pen. They leave the enamel to dry and then fire it. We met a man called Paddy who produced a pair of cufflinks worth £2000. After visiting the workshops, we went back to the Board Room to have lunch. James and Henry, the owners, opened up a big box and inside there was a vase full of enamelled flowers and they all had 24 carat gold stems, it was outstanding.

They gave each of us a solid silver stamped design to enamel at school and will come to see our results. The best part was when James showed us two pure silver boxes covered in over 2000 diamonds, which was worth a vast amount of money, they were stunning. After a huge thank you, we climbed back onto the bus and arrived back at school, having thoroughly enjoyed our trip.
