A Korean Day at Abberley Hall

A fascinating and enlightening morning was held recently as part of the Leavers’ Programme to learn more about Korean culture. It started with a truly gripping and inspiring Korean film called ‘Welcome to Dongmakgol’ Set during the Korean War in the 1950s, it tells the tale of a small number of soldiers from the US, North and South Korea who end up together in a peaceful village, called Dongmakgol. At first they confront each other, but they soon start to mix with the villagers. Catch the film to find out what happens!

The film was followed by presentations by all the Korean children at Abberley, including Brett in the Form 1s about famous buildings in Korea, Lisa in the Removes talking about traditional pastimes and games, Sun a telling us about Korean food and what they wear, Colin in the Shells describing the flag, Anthony in the Top Year giving us a visual tour of Seoul, the capital of Korea, and finally Alex, also in the Top Year, talking about the worldwide success of Korean technology. After the presentations there followed a truly informative question and answer session.

The morning ended with a real treat- a Korean lunch of fresh Kim chi (a staple diet of the Koreans made of fermented cabbage) flown over from Korea, Bulgogi, a pork dish made by chef, Korean sticky rice, followed by a Korean traditional rice drink and some confectionary to round off the meal. Everyone lucky enough to taste this amazing food also had a lesson in eating with chopsticks!
