The first weekend of May saw another extravaganza of trips which kept the 59 children who had chosen to stay in thoroughly entertained. With no cricket matches there was plenty of time for some freetime before and after tea in the pleasant sunshine. Mr.Tooby took the younger children in the woods where they cooked on a fire. Mr.Abbott prepared his Landrover for another expedition to the Forest of Dean and once more 8 children returned on Sunday evening enthused by their camping and kayaking adventure. The older boys were bemused by the choice of an old Peter Sellers film but quickly began to enjoy the chaotic Inspecter Clouseau while the girls tried to see if Britain had Talent while munching on the almost obligatory optional weekend ice-cream kindly delivered by our nice friends at Tesco.
Sunday saw another big breakfast to fuel us for the day. A coach headed to Pershore for watersports. The conditions meant that sailing was a safer option than windsurfing but with kayaking and katakanus also on the menu everyone was kept amused despite the chilly conditions.
The younger children were caged into the bus for the short trip to the safari park where the lions and tigers enjoyed looking at them. The afternoons saw rides and more ice-cream !
A smaller group headed to Birmingham to watch the play-off final of the British Basketball League. Having had a little play in the Sports Hall before we left we could appreciate even more the speed and skill on show, firstly in an All-Star game , then by the Crazy Dunkers who combined acrobatics with smashing the ball into the basket in comedy style and then finally in the Play-Off match between Newcastle Eagles and Everton Tigers. What a game it was with Newcastle squeezing home 87-84 with the tension climaxing in the final play of the game. The dancing girls who appeared at every little interlude were pretty good too ! A traffic jam on the motorway on our return could not dampen are spirits from a thoroughly entertaining afternoon.
