A lovely summers evening and the chance to hear fantastic music in the glorious setting of Worcester Cathedral.
Again we went to hear and see the very accomplished ESO Chamber Orchestra who played a fabulous concert of music by Handel, Britten, Elgar, Mozart, Telemann and Grieg under the very able direction of their Concert Master, Michael Bochmann.
After the opening Arrival of the Queen of Sheba the orchestra played the Simple Symphony by Benjamin Britten and this was followed by exquisite performances of Chanson de Matin and Chanson de Nuit by Sir Edward Elgar who is buried in the Cathedral. We were then in for a great surprise as composer and horn player, Dr Stephen Roberts had pieced together various manuscripts of Mozart’s first attempted concerto for Horn that had never been played before and proceeded to play it. This meant that we were present at the premiere of a Horn Concerto by Mozart!
After the interval we were treated to more music for horns in the shape of a Concerto for 3 horns by Telemann and this was followed by the Holberg Suite of Grieg. The concert ended with a ravishing performance of Mozart’s Symphony No 29.
