The Legacy of Baden Powell’ by Wulstan Nixon

This a very interesting talk given by Wulstan Nixon. The Howe Room became a scout camp almost with a tent in one corner and along the wall there were many Scouting items including badges, flags, posters, books, photographs and many from abroad. Wulstan himself emerged from his tent fully kitted out in his Scouting uniform. We heard about Baden Powell’s early life and his love of the outdoors as well as his skill as an artist. He came over as a highly intuitive and practical person who had a sense of humour and loved an adventure. Baden Powell certainly got an adventure in South Africa during the Boer War. He was heroic in his part in the Siege of Mafeking and again his ingenuity came to the fore with fake mines and search lights installed to alarm the enemy. He was a gallant and resourceful leader. His interest in the outdoors and training led him to write his best selling book ‘Aids to Scouting for NCOs and Men’.

He promoted chivalry, patriotism, games and good spirit. His book was practical with items such as First Aid. Wulstan made us aware of how World wide scouting is with a Map of the World covered with the flags of all the countries that do scouting. I think there were only 6 countries not mentioned! Baden Powell’s legacy is vast as Wulstan’s description of the recent 21st Scout Jamoboree, held in Essex, highlighted. At the end of the talk Wulstan had over half the audience staying behind (voluntarily) to make a ‘one man’ out of string and beads. Baden Powell wanted ‘people from all parts of the world living in harmony’ and this ideal is highly relevant in today’s world.

A wonderful talk and we thank Wulstan greatly for giving up his time to entertain us.
