Londaon Arts Trip 15th and 16th October 2007

Art + Architecture + Design + Theatre + History

After disembarking in London at HMS Belfast, Abberley’s top year walked briskly along the south bank to the Tate Modern where they split into smaller groups for an hour to seek out particular sculptures and various works of surrealism, pop art and cubism.
They then re-grouped in the Turbine Hall to look at Doris Salcedo’s extraordinary work “The Shibboleth” – a spectacular fault in the concrete foundations of the giant Turbine Hall.
From here they then walked around the corner to the modern Globe Theatre for a detailed tour and talk about Elizabethan theatre.
This was then followed by a bracing walk over the central span of the Millennium Bridge over the Thames before a restorative visit to Pizza Express on the South Bank.
“War Horse” at the National Theatre was a spectacular adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s book of the same name using intriguingly designed life-sized puppets of horses on stage. The author bumped into us in the lobby after the show and spent a good deal of time quizzing the Abberley children about their impressions of the play: he wanted feedback because, being Press Week, it was still “work in progress”.
The walk back to our berths on HMS Belfast along the South Bank was spectacular and, after a quick midnight feast, it wasn’t long before lights were out and heads were on pillows.

Next morning, after a good-sized breakfast in the galley, we listened to a fascinating talk about life on board the Belfast before being given the freedom of the ship for an hour. We packed up, said our farewells to the crew and then moved to the Design Museum to study the life and work of Iraqi-born architect Zaha Hadid, best known for the BMW Building in Leipzig and designer of the London Aquatics Centre for the 2012 Olympics.

Moving from one age of architecture to another, we then settled ourselves beneath the mighty dome of St Paul’s to examine not only the architecture of Sir Christopher Wren but also to admire the restoration of the paintings within the dome to mark the 300th anniversary of the church’s completion.

We then climbed to the whispering gallery and then on and on up to the lofty lantern above the dome, from which we gained the most wonderful views right across London in all directions. [Image]

This was a brilliant visit packed with interest and excitement. A thousand thanks are due to Mrs Vicenzotti for her hard work and meticulous planning in preparation for the trip.
