The 28th Annual Prep. Schools' Challenge at Monmouth School

This annual general knowledge competition is attended by several high profile schools from within a considerable radius. This year's Abberley team consisted of Wulstan , Naomi , Charlie , Miles , Adam and Cornelius . Only four contestants play in each match, so the children took it in turns to sit out. Each match lasts twenty tension filled minutes.

Wulstan, as Captain of the team, led Abberley against some tough competition, but they battled on, racking up some impressive scores. Their second match, against local rivals 'The Elms', was utterly nail biting – the 'time out' bell rang and the scores stood at 170 a piece. There has to be a winner so the two teams went on to a 'sudden death' scenario: fingers on buzzers for starter style questions, no conferring allowed, and may the best man, or woman, win! The first starter question came and went and no one buzzed – a toughie! The second question pierced the silence and The Elms buzzed. We held our breath ... they got it wrong; it was passed on to the Abberley team ... they got it wrong. Palpable anticipation filled the room as Mr Collins uttered the third question: "What colour does copper take on when ..." – four fingers hit the Abberley buzzers and Miles' light flashed first. The relief we felt as we heard him answer "green" was immeasurable. Abberley had won by 10 points! We went on to win our third match and thereby earned ourselves a definite place in the semi finals. We went through to the magnificent library, where the semis and the final are always held. Tockington were our opponents, and although Abberley put up a valiant fight they were not able to match the opposition captain who was nothing far short of a walking encyclopaedia and dictionary. He was impressive.

All five children performed splendidly, at times answering the toughest of questions: What is the ph of water? Where would one find the Sea of Tranquility? What is the name of the longest running Radio 4 programme? Who or what is an antiquarian?

Results

Round Opposition Abberley score Opposition score
1 - St Richard's 100 60
2 - The Elms 180 170
3 - Monmouth A 220 190
Semi Final - Tockington 110 350

The final was between Tockington and The Downs, Wraxall – an extremely challenging match which ended in a 200 – 170 victory to Tockington.

We all departed having had a thoroughly enjoyable day and very much wiser for the experience. As always the day is added to by catching up with old Abberley pupils; Goerge Shirlaw did an absolutely outstanding job as scorekeeper. For the first time ever it was all computerised and it was no mean feat to manage the sound and visual questions all from a laptop! Mr Collins was also on top form and was an equally brilliant question master.

A final thank you to Mr and Mrs Wulstan who came to offer valiant support for the second year running, it is very much appreciated, and of course to Monmouth for organising another superb Prep-Schools' Challenge.
