Physical Education encompasses a wide range of physical skills and activities as well as various theories and concepts to do with controlled body movements. At Abberley most children receive an hour-long PE lesson and five team game sessions per week. In these we seek to achieve many of the aims and objectives, which have been outlined by both the HM Inspectorate and the National Curriculum Working Party.
Physical Education contributes to the overall education of the pupils by helping them to lead full and valuable lives through engaging in purposeful physical activity. It can:
- develop physical competence and help to promote physical development.
- teach pupils, through experience, to value the benefits of participation in physical activity at school and throughout life.
- develop an appreciation of skilful and creative performances across the wide range of activities offered.
- contribute to the development of problem solving skills.
- help to establish self-esteem through the development of physical confidence and help pupils to - cope with both success and failure in competitive and co-operative activities.
- increase the development of interpersonal skills.
- improve the health and well-being of the individual.
With the co-operation of a large proportion of the teaching staff who teach games and other activities out of lesson time, the children begin to achieve these aims at an early age, starting in the Pre-prep at ages 4-8 and continuing in the Main School from 8-13. The pupils are taught through a continuous process of planning, performing and evaluating, created by both teacher led and guided self-discovery situations.
In lesson time and games the pupils participate in gymnastics, ball skills, basketball, volleyball, badminton, swimming and athletics – s well as the traditional competitive team games of rugby, hockey, football, netball, rounders and cricket. Within these activities the children have opportunities to take part in internal and external fixtures and to gain national awards such as the Five Star Athletic Awards.
Out of the formal lesson time the pupils also have the chance to experience tennis, golf, archery, climbing, fishing, ballet, riding, shooting, judo, dance, ricochet, trampolining and various other activities.
Not all children develop at the same speed but through the wide range of opportunities available the pupils are able to develop at their own pace and achieve success. Realistic goals are set by the staff and pupils themselves so that individuals can feel a sense of achievement, satisfaction and enjoyment.
Physical education at Abberley aims to build on children's enjoyment of, and need for, activity and movement. It seeks to develop co-ordination, strength, stamina, skilfulness and to promote spatial awareness, intelligent reactions to situations and appreciation of physical excellence. It should lead to a sense of well-being, a healthy lifestyle and a feeling of self-confidence. |
