Art Department - Programme of Study

Form 1 – There are three projects, one per term, linking different aspects of colour theory, practical skills and artists work. Pupils learn about primary and secondary colours, develop their painting skills and look at work by the Impressionists. They will cover block printing and mosaic work as well as ceramic modelling. Portraiture will include proportions of the face in historical context.

Removes – We look at Heraldic beasts and coats or arms in order to produce lino prints and work on repeat pattern. Pupils extend their theoretical knowledge with complementary colour, using chalk pastel to make large animal studies based on The Fauves. Our cultural links include a project focusing on Aboriginal dot paintings and the Dreamtime which is the stimulus for making a slab construction, glazed ceramic pot.

Shells – Pupils gain an understanding of perspective through drawing and painting and looking examples of work by Van Gogh. We concentrate on painting techniques blending, mixing and learning about Tertiary colour. The third term concentrates on handbuilding with clay, making coil pots, mugs and a ceramic ‘desert island’.

Form 5 and 100’s – Our first project concerns architecture and observational drawing, we develop plans into wax resist studies and then into a final relief ceramic panel. The second term looks at how Cubism evolved, pupils complete a still life and a painted cubist composition. We look at proportions of the figure and draw figures in movement with reference to specific artists, this leads to wire constructed sculptures.

Form 6 and CE’s – In term one we study Surrealism, looking at specific artists and their use of perspective and distortion. Pupils produce a painting based on their own dreams. We look at Pop Art and produce self portrait prints from stencils which can produce very original results. Our course of study concludes with sculpture, looking at the hand and it’s use in the media, making observational studies which are use to produce a life sized ceramic piece.
